Understanding hip hop lyrics has been a struggle since the start of the genre, and not just for parents trying to figure out what their kids were listening to. Some songs leave the biggest fans cringing and scratching the heads. Here are 10 confusing rap lyrics that left everybody wondering:
#1 Jay-Z “It’s Hot”
“Thirty-eight revolve like the sun round the Earth.”
Hardcore fans may claim the lyrical master was saying the heat melted his brain with this grade-school gaffaw.
#2 Kanye West, “Gettin’ It In”
“Don’t try to treat me like I ain’t famous My apologies, are you into astrology Cause I’m, I’m tryin to make it to Uranus”
Somewhere Kanye’s science teachers are cringing.
#3 Master P “Do You Know”
“If you don’t bring back my – money or my – dope, you can forget about Christmas -, cause you ain’t gon even see New Years.”
Hopefully for the holidays someone will give this guy a calendar.
#4 Lil’ Fame “Half and Half”
“First family will gradually lift that a*s up like gravity.”
Where is Sir Isaac when you need him?
#5 Chingy “Balla Baby”
“I like them black, white, Puerto Rican, or Haitian Like Japanese, Chinese, or even Asian.”
Open-minded … and thick-headed.
#6 Foxy Brown “Affirmative Action”
“Thirty-two grams raw, chop it in half, get sixteen, double it times three. We got forty-eight, which mean a whole lot of cream Divide the profit by four, subtract it by eight We back to sixteen…”
This may be the reason Foxy hasn’t made a fortune.
#7 Mase “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down”
“Young, black, and famous, with money hanging out the anus.”
Clearly, Mase relies on the classy rhyme to move audiences.
#8 Yung Joc “It’s Goin Down”
“my neck pocket’s full of Ben Franks.”
What? Was he channeling Jabba the Hut on this track?
#9. Gudda Gudda “Bedrock”
“She don’t even wonder, cause she know she bad and I got her,- . Grocery bags.”
#10 Gucci Mane “Lemonade”
“Im smokin grits and sellin chickens, corvette painted lemons”
… and apparently, dropping acid.
There really are some hopeless hip hop lyrics out there that make fans wonder, “Why bother?” Audiences can feel their brain cells dying and their IQ slipping as the songs progress. Certain artists are worse than others, but every fan has one song they just can’t accept.
Admittedly, some listeners assume the worst and don’t know the lingo or can’t make out the real lyrics enough to appreciate what’s being said. That’s when rap dictionaries are helpful. Unfortunately, there are also lyrics like these that are just plain bad.
