3 Item Checklist for Picking The Right Office Space

For professional, non-retail businesses, choosing the right office space for your company to be housed is a gigantic decision. Not only will the right office space affect the business and clients you’re able to work with, but it will also have a major impact on your employees and internal marketing efforts. For these reason, it’s vital that you have all your bases covered before you sign the papers to move your business into an office space.

To ensure you’re getting the best office space for your business, use this three-point checklist to measure each of your prospective spaces against.

Room To Grow?

Especially if your business is just getting off the ground, you’ll want to chose an office space that gives you ample room to grow. This means you’ll not only have to uncover what your immediate needs are for a business space, but you’ll also have to do a fair amount of forecasting to know if an office space will be adequate for future growth.

Knowing if a space allows you room to grow can at times be difficult to tell. To combat this, Lisa Girard, contributor to Entrepreneur.com, suggests attempting to get a shorter lease that you can easily leave if the space proves to be inadequate. You could also try putting in your lease agreement that you’d like priority status should an adjacent space become available while you’re still in your lease.

Spent Enough Time Searching?

Although you may be anxious to get your company into your dream space, it’s important not to jump at the first office space you find. You want to be sure you’re getting exactly what you need in a business space, which can take time and a lot of searching.

Randy Southerland, contributor to BizJournals.com, states that when looking for an office space for a large company, you should allow yourself 18 months to be on the hunt. However, smaller businesses can expect to need about six to eight months to find a new space. These timeframes should give you the right amount of time to decide on what your needs are and search out the perfect spot for your business to continue functioning.

Right Location For Your Industry?

We’ve all heard it a million times: location, location, location. Finding the right location for your business can oftentimes make or break a company’s success. So when you’re looking for a new office space, Amy-Mae Elliott of Mashable recommends keeping these criteria in mind when it comes to location:

  • Type of neighborhood and safety for employees and clients

  • Access to public transit

  • Nearby amenities, like food or necessary supplies

By picking a location that fits well into the industry in which you’re working as well as fulfilling the criteria mentioned above, you could make your business life a lot easier.

Choosing an office space is a decision that your company will have to live with for a long time. For this reason, it’s important not to take this task lightly or to leave anything to chance. By considering the three checklist items above, you can feel confident that you’re getting the office space that’s perfect for your business to thrive.
